Left-liberals have spent years promising successive apocalypses (trump's election, COVID, etc) & when *inevitably* these turn out to be not-at-all apocalyptic, they've ended up, in the long run, leading people to take the non-apocalyptic problem *less* seriously, not more.
There's certainly a line of hauntology/capitalist realism here--if it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, then left-libs have grown absolutely obsessed with depraved fantasies of the apocalypse. Now that nothing is apocalyptic, everything is.
(in other terms, if there is no Event, everything is an Event). This is what I was getting at in this post which @xenogothic wrote a fantastic blog post about. https://twitter.com/specularanomaly/status/1247182099217596417
Looking back, the glee leftists put on display two months ago has almost entirely evaporated....precisely bc it was based on an impossible contradiction--that humans could finally exercise agency in the one situation (the virus and its spread) where humans had next-to-none.
Paradoxically, the left's conception of agency could only be realized in complete submission to an inhuman process (corona)--ironically, it's not acc that depends on the denial of human agency, but the left, which can only hope (or beg...) for total human helplessness!
And a cached version of Land's old hyperstition post that ages like fine wine, which everyone should read if you have not. https://web.archive.org/web/20191214204444/http://hyperstition.abstractdynamics.org/archives/008891.html
