The is no denying that the current leading artists in Hip-Hop, Kendrick & Cole invite a lot of comparism bcz they have a lot in common including their conscious street perceptives, lowkey profiles imagine & a focus on concept albums.

But they is a huge difference.

[A Thread]
Kendrick’s voice modulation, theatrical ability and powerful poetic ability force you to stop and think about what he is trying to convey. J Cole on the other hand, is an introspective rapper, walking beside you & gently guiding you down the path of understanding.
Kendrick is obviously a talented artist, but his true skills lies within his creativity and his artistic ability to express his perceptive. GKMDC, for example was an album that had a bigger picture, each song on that album was placed in an order to show Kendricks maturity.
Together, each song from that album created a message. But if you would study each individual song you will realise that Kendrick lacks what people traditionally call a rapper a RAPPER. This the reason why Kenny tends to have a better discography compared to Cole.
Kendrick is an amazing artist and less of a rapper. The reason he is more popular than J Cole is simply bc of his delivery and artistic view when rapping and people relate more to him with the same energy as they did with 2 Pac.
This could be compare to 2Pac, who everyone can agree that he didn't show any interest in in using traditional lyrical skills such as wordplay but his poetic ability to express his perceptive made him shine. He wasn't an amazing lyricist but his a legendary artist without a doubt
The is a reason why Cole is referred as a mixtape rapper. He has an incredible lyrical ability but he doesn't have the same artistic view that Kendrick has. Not to say Cole doesn't have an artistic view as each song on 2014 Forest Hill was thought through. All am saying is......
The album doesn't blend in as one story as well as Kendricks album does. In other words each songs on 2014 Forest Hill is iconic while Good Maad City is an iconic album.
J. Cole could be compared to Biggie, bc both are undeniable legendary lyricists, but have usually been ranked below Kendrick & 2Pac. As said before, this is bc of how poetic songs tend to be more relatable than lyrically talented songs, which are more often respected than enjoyed
J cole and Biggie have been known for their icon style that they stick to in their songs, each song is individually icon than the album those songs were part of. In other words each song on 2014FHD is better than songs than songs on GKMDC, but GKMDC is a better album than 2014FHD
This point can be driven with Born Sinner and To Pimp a Butterfly. Born Sinner wasn't an iconic album as 2014FHD bc J Cole chose to create an album with one big picture, where each song built the final story of the album.
Each song represented many sins. However Cole is respected for his lyrical talent not his poetic abilities.

To Pimp a Butterfly was an album that didn't paint a bigger picture as well as Good Kid Maad City.
Kendrick on this particular album attempted to rap more but he isn't well known as a talented lyricist and it the reason a lot of people would agree that it was not really enjoyable listening to because it lacked an artistic view and he sounded more "preachy".
Meanwhile J Cole on Born sinner gave an artistic view but lacked rap talent and that makes Born Sinner an album that's not very enjoyable to listen to. This proves the point of how J Cole and Kendrick are respected in two different ways.
So to close this. J Cole is a better rapper and lyricist, while Kendrick is a better artist and a poet. I would also say the same with Notorious BIG and 2Pac.
