I hate Trump. All caps HATE with the fiery intensity of a star going supernova.

But I see that both #PresidentPlump and #TrumpMorbidlyObese are trending, and that makes me sad. Because body size is not something to shame anyone over, no matter who it is.

We live in an environment designed to add body fat. Machines do our work for us, and high-calorie, highly palatable food can be delivered to your door in no time via a few clicks on your phone. The selling of calories is big business, you cannot escape the marketing onslaught.

Many consider high body fat as some kind of moral failing, but it's human nature. Evolution programmed us via natural selection to want to shove yummy food into our faces & not expend much energy. Obesity is not a choice that people make. It's often a default due to our genetics.

Rather, being lean in an environment such as this one is the choice, and a terribly difficult one to follow through on. Especially when you consider all the invisible contributors to obesity, such as sexual abuse, poverty, mental health, and many others.

When you shame Trump for his weight, you send a message to anyone else with obesity that they're lesser, they're unworthy, they share this "undesirable" trait with one of the worst humans on the planet. You are telling them they are similar to him because of what the scale says.

And ample research reveals that shaming people for obesity is the opposite of helpful. It doesn't motivate them to lose weight, but rather results in poorer mental health outcomes, often resulting in comfort eating.

People with obesity face discrimination in myriad environments and situations, including from the medical establishment and their primary care physicians. It's often a constant barrage of hate that weighs on one's psyche far more than the numbers on a scale ever could.

There is so much to be critical of Trump for, we should not stoop to it being over his body.

He's an utterly incompetent, pathologically lying rapist who puts babies in cages.

Focus on that.

Apparently I need to add another tweet. This isn't about Trump and how much he "deserves" this. Insult the hell out of him for his myriad horrible behaviors; he deserves no kindness. But don't drag down the many of millions with obesity by engaging in body shaming.
