in honor of today being the anniversary of RotS and TPM being released, as well as AotC having its release anniversary three days ago, i am now going to rank all of padme amidala's costumes
criteria:
1. natalie portman must be the person wearing the costume (so none of the handmaiden decoys count, much as it pains me to cut the escape from naboo dress)
2. live action movies only (one day i'll do a full TCW rewatch and rank her TCW costumes)
3. cut scenes are allowed
36. hospital gown (rots)
it's a basic boring sack but it meets all the criteria so i have to include it. also i'm still salty about how padme died, so this is rightfully at the bottom of the list.
35. coruscant nightgown (aotc)
slightly more personality, and the hair is giving me some gorgeous christine daae vibes, but compared to the other nightgowns we see her in.....padme is slacking here.
34. blue linen dress (rots)
the matronly cut of the outfit (a sad theme to all of her rots outfits) combined with the childish hairstyling creates probably my least favorite costume of hers. there's some pretty detailing, but that's not enough to save it.
33. dressing gown (rots)
this one is...fine. another in a long line of dark, shapeless costumes for miss padme but the hair piece and bubble ponytail are nice.
32. "leia buns" cloak
we love a good velvet cloak, i just wish this one had a bit more contrast to its fabrics. some pretty beading on the shoulders and i love the hair, plus it covers up that linen dress so win-win.
31. return to naboo
far and away my least favorite of her queen costumes. another shapeless costume and padme looks like she's drowning in it. could've been saved if there was more detail to it, and if the headpiece wasn't so heavy.
30. veranda nightgown (rots)
it's pretty but also looks hella uncomfortable, and while i know our girl padme is always extra, this one misses the mark. we do love the waterfall back though (water being the closest thing her costumes have to thematic coherence)
29. mustafar (rots)
i love the hair and i appreciate the attempt at a more military-esque style of fashion (makes sense from a worldbuilding perspective after 3 years of war!) but it's executed poorly.
28. revelation gown (rots)
another dark shapeless dress, but at least this one has some more visual detail going on, and i really like the hair.
27. final senate appearance (rots)
yet another lackluster RotS senate gown, but the angular pieces at least give it some structure. and i love the little half moon hairpiece, feels like it's symbolizing the twilight of the republic.
26. peacock gown (rots)
all over the marketing and then cut from the film. this one is elevated by the colors, which provide needed visual contrast, and the structured look of the pieces. would've ranked it higher if it weren't for the hair.
25. post-senate (tpm)
this is fine. i don't really have strong opinions on it. it's got some pretty detail but most of that is lost in the movie because it's an all black gown in a darkly lightly scene. don't love the hairstyle though, which is why it's ranked down here.
24. visit home (aotc)
also cut from the final movie. this outfit is so firmly 2002 that it makes me laugh, but the cloak is what sells it. not sure if i would wear a midriff outfit when bringing my crush to meet my family, but you do you.
23. lars homestead (aotc)
padme really has a thing for casual midriffs, huh. i really love the outfit and how it feels like padme's take on desert wear, plus the hair is stunning. however idk wtf is going on with that couture nun cloak and it brings the ensemble down.
22. blue sunburst (aotc)
i used to really dislike this outfit but it's grown on me a ton. probably the most casually dressed we see padme and i love the hard-wearing fabric of the smock contrasted with the beautiful embroidery and fortuny dress underneath.
21. aqua nightgown (rots)
i really like this nightgown. the delicate detailing adds interest without being overwhelming and the etheral fabric again reminds us of water and waterfalls. one of my favorite rots outfits
20. refugee disguise (aotc)
another one that has grown on me! compared to the rest of padme's outfits it's a weird left swerve into russian court fashion, but the rich gold and maroon fabrics are very pretty, as is the headpiece.
19. tatooine peasant (tpm)
it's plain and it's simple, but i love it because it is so very quintessentially star wars looking.
18. geonosis outfit (aotc)
an iconic look, and the best version is with the cape (obviously). we love a practical adventuring outfit and this one has it in spades.
17. dinner with anakin (aotc)
simple, yet elegant. i love a dramatic feather cape and intricately beaded scarf. i especially love the whole art deco dominatrix vibe she's she's giving off. a classic. we stan.
16. pilot disguise (aotc)
naboo has the best fashion, especially since i'm a sucker for art nouveau-inspired clothes. the pilot uniform is a lovely combination of warm tones and despite being military is still clearly sticking to the naboo aesthetic.
15. pre-senate (tpm)
padme may have just barely escaped her planet but she's still dressed to kill. not my favorite of her queen outfits, but still a good one. i'm a fan of the cream/grey/dusty rose color scheme and the dramatic headpiece.
14. wedding dress (aotc)
a beautiful lacy dream (made from an antique edwardian bedspread!!) that leans hard into the romance of padme. veil cap isn't my fave, but that's personal preference. shame we didn't get to see more of this dress.
13. packing dress (aotc)
an underrated fave. this is a dress that means business because padme is not here to play. also feels like what a disney princess dress would look like in space. love it.
12. green robe (rots)
probably my favorite of her RotS senate outfits. it actually feels like it has some personality and color. sadly, was mostly cut from the movie so we didn't get to see a ton of it.
11. flame handmaiden (tpm)
another iconic look. that ombre dye job is incredible, and despite the fabric looking heavy it moves beautifully. and the effect of having multiple handmaidens in a group is awesome.
10. senate address (aotc)
TRAGICALLY left on the cutting room floor. i love the fabrics and the color contrast. the elizabethen style ties back to her past as a queen but the less grandiose nature of the gown shows how her role in the galaxy has changed.
9. nightgown and blue robe (aotc)
a criminally underrated outfit! the delicately embroidered silk slip combined with the royal blue robe and her loosely tousled hair is bring some capital-r Romance. stop sleeping on this one, it's great.
8. parade gown (tpm)
the drama of that fluttered cape though! i love the way it looks like it's made out of giant rose petals, and the rest of the outfit is suitably restrained so as to not compete.
7. loyalist committee (aotc)
hands down my favorite senatorial look. the color, the mixed fabrics, the beading, the tailoring, the gold accent jewelry....i'm obsessed.
6. red throne gown
an absolutely iconic Look. the first time we see padme she's wearing this and it's a strong start out of the gate. it's larger than life and incredibly detailed and lets you know the costume team is not fucking around on these movies. a classic.
5. water gown (rots)
it's sad that this is her best rots look because she's DEAD, but it really captures the tragedy of padme. giving us incredible ophelia-by-way-of-waterhouse vibes and a fitting costume to end the very shakespearian RotS.
4. battle handmaiden (tpm)
naboo society is committed to the clothing aesthetic and i am here for it. the handmaidens are ready to kick some ass in these gorgeous maroon coats with dramatic sleeves (and the best looking blasters). nothing but good things to say here.
3. lake dress (aotc)
honestly any of the top three could easily be number one. this dress is a classic for a reason: it's light and airy and so ethereal she really does look like a glowing dream. the ombre is to die for, the silk and chiffon move beautifully. absolutely adore.
2. picnic dress
highkey romantic and dreamy, the perfect dress to wear on a meadow picnic date with your splenda daddy. i love the medieval feel to this and again it's a dress that evokes the feeling of an epic poem with a love story. absolutely obsessed with it.
1. senate dress (tpm)
absolutely her best outfit and i will take no questions. it's big and grand and imposing and full of incredible detail. the mixture of fabric and texture sends me in the best way. she's coming to plead for assistance and by god you're going to remember her.
AND THAT'S THAT ON THAT. but first, a quick shoutout to my girl sabe for rocking two awesome costumes of her own in TPM

(before you @ me, yes that's natalie in the escape from naboo gown; she wore it in the promo pictures but keira was the only one who wore it in the movie)
