I like aspects of both story games and old school stuff but in my head they sit firmly in 2 separate camps: tools for character led storytelling and tools for societally led storing telling.
If I ran a game about a group of fun protagonists fighting against a villain I would run Fellowship. If I wanted to explore messy high school drama I would play Monsterhearts. Both of these stories would be intensely character driven and PbtA supports that style super well
OSR stuff on the other hand is much more supportive of a more socio-economic style of storytelling. Your PC is a very small part of a large system that defines the current of their lives. They aren’t the destined heroes who will change the world by their own hand.
They will likely die on a spike trap and when they do another poor wretch will take their place cus living ain’t cheap and there’s coin in grave robbing. I think that this is shown most by faction play. You are outsiders that can tip the balance but your still navigating a system
Obviously YMWV but these are my personally thoughts. I don’t claim to be well read enough to state any of this with any sort of authority and if you have some examples that prove me super wrong I’d like to hear about them.
