I think #ThePhantomMenace is the closest George Lucas ever got to making his Flash Gordon serial.
If TPM is whiz-bang Saturday matinee cotton candy, then #RevengeOfTheSith is Faust with lazer swords, the most ambitious and self-serious of the SW films.
Their differences in style and tenor are by design, just as the glam new wave style of Purple Rain differs from the jazzy nouveau trouille of Parade because their respective stories require that tone.
This is why I dislike the phrase “feels like Star Wars,” because they should all feel different as the story requires. Typically, that phrase means “is most similar in style to my favorite SW film.”
