The biggest obstacle to reopening the country will be schools. Nobody anywhere seems to have a good answer on how to do so. Distance learning puts enormous pressure on teachers, parents, students. But no method of reopening classrooms seems to be safe enough to try just yet.
We have a crisis of child care and of childhood. Our economy for the last 40 years requires both parents to work, so asking them to be both parents and teachers and workers is...impossible. And for us single parents it’s even harder.
The lack of testing/tracing is a massive problem. It might be possible to try some of the various reopening strategies, including the hybrid models, but if we don’t have a clear sense of who is and isn’t infected, any on-site learning puts teachers and families at risk
Meanwhile, disaster capitalists and ed reformers like Gates and Jeb Bush and Betsy DeVos are circling like vultures, hoping to use this crisis to smash teaching profession despite fact that permanent distance learning is awful for kids and can’t be managed by parents.
So right now there are no answers, but this should be a top priority for state governments. Who are instead planning huge budgets cuts to schools, making this crisis so much worse.
