Folks are gonna learn over the next decade just how expensive it is to only think about your bottom line
“I know that this hurts our most vulnerable departments like Black studies but it doesn’t make sense financially to support four year schools”

Please extra miss my mentions with that unless you want a soft or hard block

Either say the government should pay tuition or stfu
You could be sitting at home learning but please feel free to read whatever the fuck you want into my tweets (there are classes that might teach you not to)
Importantly, the reason campuses are rushing to force faculty and encourage students to come back to campus is specifically because people deciding to leave higher ed to hang out to dry until the pandemic is over and saying “that’s not my problem”

It is in fact gonna be your problem and you can complain about me pointing that out but that doesn’t change the truth of it
I’m pointing to the need for people to learn from this pandemic that we have a collective responsibility to each other. Instead of going on about how you’re skipping next year, say you’re skipping next year AND organizing for congress to bail out your college of choice.
And miss me with “but they’re only 18 and don’t know how to write Congress” because one, this is being driven by parents. It’s the parents.
A lot of you lack imagination and it shows
Anyway before y’all get giddy and put more words in my mouth, I literally retweeted this with a word of support earlier https://twitter.com/chronicle/status/1262737285306560512?s=21 https://twitter.com/chronicle/status/1262737285306560512
Here is how universities are gonna find savings — if they stay open:
— cut low wage staff who provide essential service
— cut departments that teach social justice
— cut libraries that serve the whole local community
— cut services & subsidies for minoritized and poor students
If you care about any of these things, you’re gonna have to do better than talking about “value”

https://twitter.com/ibjiyongi/status/1262750687265386496?s=21 https://twitter.com/ibjiyongi/status/1262750687265386496
When you talk about value, you are speaking the language of people who think it’s fine to pay adjuncts $3000 with no benefits or job security to teach a class of any number of people for 4.5 months and like education is private capital, not a public social good
Anyway, before I mute this thread, let me remind you that HBCUs in particular have long generally been in precarious positions and that failing to advocate for and support them now could be the end of them, and that would be tragedy/disaster.
