Watched Valkyrie, a 2008 war film about the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler starring Tom Cruise. I never hear it discussed and think it’s criminally overlooked. It’s the rare Hollywood movie that’s generally historically accurate and has a meaningful message.
The word “Nazi” is grossly overused today, often by people who have no idea what it means or what life under the Third Reich was like. Valkyrie highlights the brave Germans who risked everything to go against Hitler, true heroes who all gave their lives for a just cause.
I’m very glad that Valkyrie was made. It depicts a forgotten moment of WWII history that deserves to be spotlighted. Not everyone in Nazi Germany was evil. Many opposed Hitler and the Holocaust, which is why I think it’s very unfair to engage in blanket revisionist history.
It is truly lamentable that Hollywood as a whole no longer produces meaningful historical films like Valkyrie. I don’t think it could be made today since its niche subject matter wouldn’t be viewed as profitable. Regardless, it gets my full recommendation and deserves to be seen.
