Current furlough notwithstanding, this is the 100th issue since I joined WSC. I was hired fresh out of uni as Publishing Assistant, having done two weeks' work experience. I couldn't believe my luck and still can't, so I thought I'd share some memorable moments from my time here https://twitter.com/WSC_magazine/status/1262345888053243905
My first "major" assignment was to go to the 2012 Toy Fair and witness John Barnes launch the new Subbuteo. I think I was supposed to interview him but ended up chatting to England's top Subbuteo player instead. I still get emails reminding me to register for this year's Toy Fair
Just under a year after I joined, @campbellwpaul left for the Guardian so I got a surprise promotion to News Editor. It meant I got to send my terrible puns out into the world as headlines, including this one about the cost of policing matches
One of the first issues I worked on editorially was also one of the hardest – when the Hillsborough Independent Panel's report was released. Ian Preece's eye-witness account from the Kop that day was harrowing and still stays with me
In 2013 Alex Ferguson decided to announce his retirement the evening before our next issue went to print, which meant a last-minute rejig and new cover. A few years later Sepp Blatter did the same thing with his resignation – yet another reason to dislike him
A couple of issues later we published the winners of the first ever WSC Writers' Competition, in memory of David Wangerin. First prize was claimed by @_MarkESanderson. It's still running, and the deadline is soon. Reading them is always a highlight for me https://www.wsc.co.uk/writers-comp
One of the best things about my job is getting to read brilliant writing before anyone else (except @AndyLyonsWSC of course). WSC 350 was a huge milestone and a particular highlight, as the special issue included the trio of @camsell59, @barneyronay & @david_conn
In 2018 we launched @kickaroundmag, a spin-off for children. I was honoured to be its editor and, though it didn't last, I'm proud we tried something different. Loads of features are free to download, as they may help some of you who are home schooling https://www.wsc.co.uk/stories/14311-free-football-themed-resources-to-help-with-home-schooling-children
The decision to no longer accept gambling advertising in the magazine was taken in late 2018 and is one I'm immensely proud of
Times are ALWAYS tough at WSC. We rely on our loyal readers to keep going and it was humbling that when we asked for help so many of you signed up. Recording a couple of the podcasts (brilliantly put together by @d_gray_writer) was a recent highlight https://www.patreon.com/whensaturdaycomes
And now here we are, nearly a decade later. I got to open this one as a "reader" for the first time in 100 issues and it includes one of the most powerful articles I can remember us publishing, by @liampw https://shop.wsc.co.uk/wsc-399.html
The best thing about @WSC_magazine is that, even if I didn't work here, I'd still read it cover to cover every month. That I've got to do my dream job for so long is crazy, I can't believe I've been so lucky. Hopefully I'll be able to do this thread again when WSC 499 is released
