Someone sent me a link to Revolut's job ad for a Head of Engineering and it's truly one of the best examples of "how to write a terrible job ad" I've ever seen.

They open by telling you how great the leadership team are (what's left of them). Really hammering home the point that YOU WILL BE A LEADER... except they directly contradict that in the first paragraph.
"leadership team is our C-suite level" yet this is a "Head of" role.

I bet you want to know everything about the job they want you to do! Well I've got some good news.
Your entire job can be summarised with three of the most generic sentences you'll ever read.

* You will check our engineers adhere to best practices
Generic as fuck
* You will raise the bar of our product and solution architecture
Ok. How? Just by turning up?
* You will ensure our engineering teams consist of A-Players
The 90's called and want their job spec back m8

Now it's time for my favourite part. The most detailed element of the spec, an exhaustive list of ridiculous requirements you need to meet in order to get the job. There's A LOT to unpack here.
* 10+ years as an engineer
9yrs experience? Fuck off and throw your CV in the sea.

* Minimum GPA...
Putting aside how unbelievably pretentious and exclusionary this is, it's just straight up lazy. I get it, you want high achieving academic types. To expect that a high GPA can predict the suitability of an employee with over 10yrs experience is embarrassing.

* STEM degree from top 15 unis
It shouldn't come as a surprise to regular listeners that Revolut is simply not interested in candidates from under-privileged backgrounds. I'll let the rest of you deconstruct the arbitrary classification of Uni value from non-US countries.

* School/uni Olympic medal in competitions...
Would LOVE to see them validate the existence of a medal you won when you were 12. Can you IMAGINE having over 10yrs of experience and still being asked about a medal you won in school in order to validate your suitability for a job?

The world has changed rapidly this year. Let's not slip back to the old days where employers could say whatever they wanted in job ads because people are desperate. If you have a say in how job ads are written in your company, encourage your own team to be better than this trash.
I'm done. I need to go and ring my Mam to find out if my maths participation medal is still hanging in her kitchen.
