Hot take: Kh2 uses the song “under the sea” better than the movie. Howard Ashman weote a song that goes “don’t join the normies and their capitalism stay with us colorful weirdoes” but its use is antagonistic to ariel’s story. By making Sora sing it, this dynamic is flipped.

Also Ariel staying a mermaid all the way to KH3 proves that while she made her relationship with Eric presumably work, she didn’t give up on her identity for him. It’s a lot more uplifting to this queer.

Ages ago lindsay ellis pointed out that triton is the one with an arc kn the movie, but with this change, Ariel now has a stronger arc herself, where her want to be human reveals her need to escape her father’s smothering.
