If you wear glasses or contacts this is your reminder to support your independent opticians and to ditch the chains.

We don’t do Specsavers here.

See thread on why as well as how you can save a couple quid.
First: Regardless of where you get tested, an optician MUST provide you with a prescription.

You can use this at any other optician of your choice to purchase glasses or contact lenses.

s.26(4) Opticians Act 1989 covers this.
So about independent opticians:

- Better customer service. It’s not some chancer trying to sell you 2 for £149 and ten different coatings;

- Proper qualified opticians look after you from A to B including picking frames and running the supplementary tests. Not just for 10 mins;
- Your local opticians will likely be able to dispense your prescription in a matter of days, some even have the ability to do it same day!

- Minor repairs are also quick; on site and friendly;

- More face time and much better advice than dealing with a customer service bod
- Some local independents also have the ability to provide a really good deal; loads of financing packages for more pricier frames and a wider choice.

They aren’t tied into providing a given selection of brands.
Other Tips:

- Employer offering you a voucher for free specs? It’s worthless unless the optician ticks “For VDU use ONLY” ;

- Claiming Universal Credit? You might be entitled to a free eye test. Ask for an NHS Optical Voucher if you’re eligible.
