Thread on why this MAMAMOO ad isn’t cultural appropriation or racist from an Egyptian 🇪🇬
#MAMAMOO https://twitter.com/rbw_mamamoo/status/1262270366421901315
1. This is set in ancient Egypt. She’s an Asian woman dressed as a Greek in ancient Egyptian garments.
She’s just dressed up! What’s she’s wearing on her head&body has 0 cultural significance in Egypt.
2. “She’s darker then first half”
It’s clearly a tan filter over the video. This doesn’t imply that the middle east is “dirty” as someone said. it’s supposed to give the impression of a sandy desert. You know, what everyone’s first thought of egypt is. it’s just smart editing.
3. “it’s a skin whiting product so they’re implying middle easterns need whiter skin”
It’s bath milk. Cleo used bath milk because it makes your skin all nice and smooth and helps w aging. literally nothing to do with whitening.
Overall the video is completely harmless. It features an idol playing a character that has no cultural significance to the nation(s) she is from.
Please stop speaking for Egyptians (and any other person).
