Day 2 of
#right2home & we're THRILLED our friends at
@right2homeUK have put together this wonderful video on
#humanrights using our icons

Equal & independent living is ALL about human rights! Today we're going to be adding lots of info to this THREAD on our FREE resources
https://twitter.com/right2homeUK/status/1262655411880067072

So what are human rights and how can you use them to help advocate for yourself, family members or others? Our online toolkit
http://www.knowyourhumanrights.org.uk has got you covered. It focuses on mental health and mental capacity, including learning disabilities and Autism.

This section of Know Your Human Rights looks at what human rights are, and takes you on to find out about who has human rights (YOU, EVERYONE) and how they should be upheld in the UK
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/human-rights/what-are-human-rights/

Know Your Human Rights has information on UK human rights law, important for independent living, including the rights to life, to not be harmed, to liberty, to family and private life (including having a say), and to not be discriminated against.

REALLY IMPORTANTLY Know Your Human Rights has tools to help you 1) work out if you situation is one that using human rights can help with AND 2) how to raise your concerns about human rights
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/using-my-human-rights/about-the-tool/

You can access tool 1 on working out if your issue is about human rights using this link. There is a short video to help you see how you can use the tool. You can save a PDF at the end so you have information about human rights and your situation.
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/using-my-human-rights/flowchart-1/

You can then use tool 2 which will help you work out how to raise your concerns and advocate for yourself using the human rights information you got from tool 1. This has lots of tips and ideas for action.

Some of the tools in Know Your Human Rights include this Letter Writing Guide to help you write to the relevant authorities to raise the risks to your legally protected human rights
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/letter-writing-guide.docx

Plus we have this Letter Writing Guide to go with the Letter Template in Tweet 8 (sorry we called that one a guide by mistake!)
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/KYHR-letter-template-FD.pdf

We've included people's real life stories from our work with self-led and community groups, advocates, service providers, NHS and Local Authorities. These show how you can use human rights to change poor decisions without going to court.
https://knowyourhumanrights.co.uk/peoples-human-rights-stories/

We also have accessible short guides on human rights. We made these with people with mental health issues and mental capacity issues, including learning disabilities, Autism, dementia and brain injuries. You can download all the short guides here

The fabulous folks at
@mencapliverpool helped us turn our co-produced guide on Learning Disability, Autism and Human Rights (download here
https://www.bihr.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=5867be08-7d9e-42d1-8fb5-f94770df85cf) into some BRILLIANT films, scripted and acted out! The introduction film is here

The films show stories about our human rights. Some are distressing because they show what happens when people's human rights are not upheld. Bryn's story is about the right to life and how staff making decisions did not think about his rights

This film is about the right to private and family life. Tim and Slyvia have different learning disabilities. Their parenting skills were being assessed. CCTV camera were on all the time. Human rights doesn't allow diproportionate decisions.

Aaron, Sophie, Adam, Teresa, Anne & Paul
@mencapliverpool talk about why knowing their human rights matters: "I can help someone who needs help, they shouldn't be discriminated...In the end of the day they're just like anyone else. They are a person"

It is also vital that staff know about human rights to challenge poor decisions and make right-respecting decisions EVERY DAY. Watch Jodie and Martin who are advocates, Beth a psychologist and Tracey a LD nurse, talking about how they use human rights

Here is our video on The Human Rights Act in 2 Minutes! The law works not just in the courts but in everyday life. There is a legal duty on officials to respect and protect your human rights. This isn't about being nice or kind it is about the law.
