The article talked about Aanganwadi workers in rural Madhya Pradesh who walked miles and miles while dealing with their periods. It reminded me of some of the Lady Health Workers I talked to, who had to show up and lead polio drives right after their C-section deliveries
Of Lady Health Workers who had to carry their toddlers with them on immunisation drives as they visited hundreds of homes daily because there was no one to look after their children when they went to work.
I hope when this is all over or subsides, there is an appreciation of the work all health workers do especially the nursing staff and community health workers and that the government gives them living wages.
Next time, senior doctors and health ministry officials denigrate lady health workers& tell them that they don't deserve higher wages because they aren't doctors, they should do well to remember that community health workers are essential workers who are still doing home visits
and tending to the health needs of their community even more so than regular days because of closure of health facilities and people's reluctance to visit doctors/hospitals to avoid risking COVID-19
