Before we get to the fun stuff, what exactly is Astrology? Now, my girl Google always comes through for me, because she gives the plainest and most unbiased definition below:
Now, you've probably heard of other types of astrology stemming from the Hindus (Vedic astrology) etc, however, since Western astrology is the one we are more familiar with, that's what we're doing!
As you all should know by now, there are 12 traditional zodiac signs.
As you all should know by now, there are 12 traditional zodiac signs.
I say "traditional" because in recent times, there has been an emergence of the 13th sign, which is Ophiuchus, but for the purpose of this lesson, we don't claim her.
The first thing you will need to know is that each sign is ruled by a celestial body.
The second thing you need to know is that each celestial body represents a different part of your personality, other characteristics and outlook.
Let's cover the first point, shall we?

Okay! So, you're wondering what do these planets have to do with anything, right? Of course you are. This brings me to my second point, which was that each celestial body listed above control a different part of your life and personality than the others.
At the time you were born, each planet was positioned within a particular point or constellation (cluster/pattern of stars) in the galaxy, all named after the 12 signs. Remember, the earth isn't the only body that rotates/revolves.
Soooo, the sun sign is the easiest to state. It has only to do with the month and date you were born. The sun moves through each constellation once per month.
The sun governs your basic personality and ego.

The moon governs your temperament, daily moods and the flow of your emotions.
The moon moves through each of the twelve constellations every 2-3 days, which is why it is possible for two people to have the same birth date in different years, and have 2 different moon signs.

Mercury governs your thought process, intellect, language and communication.
Mercury moves through each zodiac every 15-60 days. (it's unstable - no wonder Gemini goes here).
A good rule of thumb is that is never more than 2 signs away from the sun in either direction.

Venus governs the way you receive love (kinda like your love language).
Venus moves through each zodiac exactly every 30 days, sort of like the sun, but with no set days. It is also never more than two signs away from the sun in any direction.

Now, let's put what we've learned into practice. Below are two charts which shows each sign and in which sign they are positioned.
NB: These two charts are 2 differentpeople, born on the same date, July 28. The left was born in 1999 and the right in 1996. See the difference?

If you realize, Mercury and Venus for both persons follow the two-sign limit.
Person 1 has the same Mercury and Sun sign, and their Venus is 1 sign ahead of Leo, at Virgo.
