Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The temple stands on the Western bank of the holy river Ganga,and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas,the holiest of Shiva Temples.The main deity is known by the names Shri Vishwanath or Vishweshwara literally meaning Lord of the Universe.
Shri Vishwanath Mandir has the tallest temple tower in the world with the Vimana's height being around 250 ft.
The Temple has been referred to in Hindu scriptures for a very long time as a central part of worship in the Shaiva Philosophy.
It has been destroyed and re- constructed a number of times in the history by Muslim Invaders.The last structure was demolished by Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal Emperor who constructed the Gyanvapi Mosque on its site.
In 1930s,Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya planned to replicate Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir in the campus of BHU.The Birla family undertook the construction and foundation was laid in March 1931.
The temple was finally completed in 1966.
Shri Vishwanath Mandir, although a Lord Shiva Temple,consist of nine temples within one temple and is open for all.The Shiva temple is in the ground floor and the Lakshmi Narayan and Durga temple are in the first floor. Other temples within Shri Vishwanath Mandir are Natraj,
Mata Parvati,Lord Ganesha, Panchmukh Mahadev,Lord Hanuman and Nandi. Entire text of Bhagwad Gita extracts from sacred Hindu Scriptures are inscribed with illustrations on the inner marble walls of the temple.
