Dispatches from the field! 1/n:
MASSIVE surface rupture here on the order of 2 cm vertical separation. ENORMOUS wildflowers for scale.
Small but mighty, this Mw 6.5 ruptured some of the best desert pavement I’ve seen outside of (sorta) nearby Panamint Valley. What’s underneath the pavement, you might ask..?
Oh, just casually faulted to bits bedrock. We found a mining test pit near some of the surface rupture, and we ooed and aahed (Ali Pickering and my toe for scale)
But these features have to be my favorites so far...the most ADORABLE and completely helpful/diagnostic slip indicators...mini-stepovers!! See @TTremblingEarth doing his beat impression of a restraining bend. I can’t get enough of these cuties.
we would have been searching longer for the rupture if it weren’t for our guiding psychedelic owl. Having insar data like these made our jobs a lot more efficient. S/o to @rangefront @runr447 for compiling the remote sensing data shared on Twitter etal with us out here. /end
