I knew Justice V.R.Krishna Iyer well. He was an institution by himself. He was a Minister in E.M. S. Namboodiripad's government. In 1968, he was appointed a Judge of Kerala High Court. He was elevated to Supreme Court in 1973./1

The language of his judgments was difficult and different. Prof. Madhu Dadavate MP used to say that if a man falls to the ground, J. Krishna Iyer will say, "his verticality was transformed into horizontality by the gravitationality of the earth." /2

Sushma and I knew him well. She used to seek his advice on jail reforms. Unfortunately, J.Krishna Iyer lost his wife in 1974. He was devastated. He would keep looking at his wife's portrait in his drawing-room./3

Sushma delivered the first or second Sarda Krishna Iyer memorial lecture in Kerala. One morning, I receive a phone call from him. Justice Krishna Iyer is on the line. He wants me to see him immediately. So I reach his house around 8 am./4

Justice Krishna Iyer is sitting in the drawing-room gazing at the portrait of his wife. He has a strange request. He says "R.S.Narula retired CJ of High Court has told me about a man in Patiala who can connect me to my wife's spirits. I will get to see her and speak to her." /5

My job is simple. I have to locate him and arrange Justice Krishna Iyer's meeting with this gentleman. He will then arrange Justice Krishna Iyer's meeting with the spirit of his wife. He gives me the name and address of the gentleman. /6

I came home and spoke to Sushma. Thanks to CJ Narula's help, the man is located and the meeting is fixed. It is a confidential meeting. The visit is camouflaged. Krishna Iyer is visiting the Ambala jail on the request of Sushma Swaraj, Haryana's Minister of Jails. /7

The next day, early morning, Justice Krishna Iyer is leaving for the meeting. I reach Justice Iyer's residence to see him off. Justice Iyer leaves. He does not want any of us around. He wants to meet his wife alone./8

Justice Krishna Iyer visits Ambala Jail on his return journey. J.Krishna Iyer is back home in New Delhi. He calls me over.
SK : Sir, how was the meeting ?
J Krishna Iyer : Excellent ! Sushma organised everything perfectly. It went off very well. /9

SK : Sir, could you meet your wife ?
VRK : Oh Yes ! She was right before me, in a white Saree.
SK : Sir, could you speak with her ?
VRK : Yes, for quite some time. I told her all about me and the family and she about herself. /10

VRK : You know this man has some supernatural powers. So he arranges the meeting.
SK : Sir, you spoke to her directly ?
VRK : No.This man acts like a Telephone operator. I spoke to him and he spoke to her. Then she spoke to him and he spoke to me. /11

SK : Sir, you will go there again ?
VRK : No. The man told me that frequent meetings are not possible. But thank you very much. Thank Sushma also. She arranged everything so well. /12

This is the legendary love story of a legendary man. He was one of the greatest jurists the country has ever produced. He loved his wife so much. It is a tribute to the only relationship that lasts through the old age and a lifetime.
