ASK ME ANYTHING about photography

I will answer the 10-15 most interesting questions over the next few days

#AskRivelino
1) What's a resource you would recommend for beginners?

Ted Forbes has good taste, is an excellent educator, and truly understands the formal elements (the "structure") of photography. His photo assignment series is great way to start learning how to see
2) How do I find models for my portrait portfolio?

I started by taking classes. Then, I hired amateur models on Model Mayhem. Some girls will collaborate for cheap or for free (in exchange for photos). It's a great way to get practice and gain confidence

3) How can a man look good on Instagram pictures ?

We all look better when we stick our heads out a bit forward. It helps define our jawline better. Peter Hurley describes it well here. Check out the before and after photos at 11m50. Sha-bang!
4) What is the most overrated and underrated photography equipment?

The most overrated equipment is new digital cameras with more megapixels. We have enough megapixels

The most underrated equipment is probably photo books. We have to study the greats in order to get better
5) What change in mindset took your art to the next level?

The Artist's Way helped me get over my shame. For years, when I was starting out, I felt like a loser for being so self conscious about my art. Julia Cameron helped me realize I needed to be gentle with my "artist child"
6) Top photography inspirations?

Here are a few photos I love, and why I love them:

1928 Andre Kertesz. Simple, precise, balanced

1960 Hank Walker. Dramatic, intimate, tragic

1970s Miroslav Tichy. Strange, perverted, IDGAF

2005 Edward Burtynsky. Immense, overwhelming, epic
