Shall I make a must watch horror movie thread for quarantine?
Wow I did not expect this !! I’m going to make this limited to movies released past 2010
1. Hush (2016) directed by @flanaganfilm ( one of my favourite horror directors right now!) fantastic indie horror film where a deaf writer is retreated in the woods only for a very sadistic serial killer to prey on her. Available on Netflix 10/10
The VVITCH (2015)
Set in the 17th of New England, focusing on the experiences that a family faces when one of them goes missing.... ( warning: I believe they speak in old English ?) really strong performances here 10/10
The Ritual (2017) British Horror film that focuses on a group of lads who reunite after one of their mate was brutally murdered. Really nice themes of guilt, friendship and redemption. 8/10 available on Netflix
Oculus (2013) @flanaganfilm one of my favourite horror films! Focuses on two siblings revisiting their childhood trauma/ tragedy only to find the truth of their parents death
Us (2019) @JordanPeele a must watch!! My only spoiler is ‘do we ever wonder what lies beneath us ?’
Hereditary (2018) @AriAster you absolute sick twisted genius! 10/10
Babadook (2014) Story about a mother who is still traumatised of her husbands violent death and her son is tormented by a creature called the Babadook who’s out to kill them both.
Midsommar (2019) @AriAster you absolute genius you did it again didn’t you ? Grief trauma abandonment and toxic relationships. Never thought I’d be terrified by a ‘happy’ horror film yet here I am. Available on amazon prime
Gerald’s Game (2017) directed by @flanaganfilm adaption of Stephen Kings novel. Wife who accidentally kills her husband and is handcuffed to her bed with no one to rescue her.... available on Netflix
Don’t Breathe (2016) Three thieves decide to break into a rich blind Veteran’s house... much to their surprise he’s not as defenceless as he seems. 9/10
Suspira (2018) nothing could ever beat the original however Tilda Swinton’s acting here is phenomenal ( if you end up watching it google her role). If you’re into witches a bit of Antonio Artaud inspired work you’ll like this. Available on Amazon prime
It comes out at night (2017) has some flaws one of them being it’s trailer so I advise NOT to watch it. Looks at two families in a post apocalyptic world. 7/10 I liked that they tried :)
Annihilation (2018) directed by Alex Garland ( directed Ex Machina and worked on 28 days later) not exactly a horror film but a worthy mention. If you’re into cerebral sci-if a MUST watch 10/10 available on Netflix
The Invisible Man (2020) Elisabeth Moss plays a role of a victim of severe abuse by her ex (her perpetrator) that will go to extreme lengths to control her even after his ‘death’. Really intense and at times gut wrenching
Green Room (2015) first Slashed film mention. Not for the faint hearted
Happy Death Day (2017) & Happy death day 2U (2019) Slasher horror film but fun and enjoyable to watch.
Lights out (2016) a supernatural entity or a imaginary friend? That preys upon a family after the violent death of their father. 6/10 at times jumpy and suspenseful
Split (2016) @MNightShyamalan not sure how I feel like horror films using Mental illnesses like DOD esp when it’s demonised but James McAvoy is a talented Scottish actor
Swallow (2019) housewife that coincidentally develops pica once she finds out she’s pregnant. NOT for the faint hearted, extremely liberating and a fantastic feminist horror film 10/10
Evil dead (2013) remake of the 80s classic where a group of friends summons a demon in the middle of nowhere ...
Black Swan (2010) Darren Aronofsky was going to include Mother! (Available on Netflix) but can’t say I enjoyed that biblical horror film, not to mention Black Swan is also clearly plagiarised off from Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon. But I digress I love this film.
Doctor Sleep (2019) directed by @flanaganfilm a nice homage to The Shining, I really liked what Flanagan has done into the world of Stephen Kings universe. Enjoyable horror film
IT (2017) ‘we all float down here’ ( I still prefer the 90s mini series) but this is worth the watch ! Available on Netflix
A Quiet Place (2018) follows a family through a post apocalyptic world. Wouldn’t say it’s scary as others have suggested, it’s on the tame side but still enjoyable film regardless.
The invitation (2015) a dinner party of all dinner parties you know the ones you invite your ex’s to 🙃Interesting idea, wish it had a better execution. available on Netflix
Crimson Peak (2015) directed by @RealGDT a gothic romance movie with supernatural entities in creepy old mansions. available on Netflix ( strangely this movie reminded me of the film Stoker directed by Park Chan Wook) 7/10
A cure for wellness (2016) critics scrutinised this film for its outright plagiarism. ( which I found funny bc Hollywood blatantly copies Asian cinema) anyway it was enjoyable to watch 8/10
the James Wan cinema and it’s inspirations- The conjuring, Sinister, insidious, Annabelle etc aka the never ending I’ll slap on a well known name and we’ll push out a jumpy scare horror film. haven’t seen the Lighthouse yet so I’m going to recc it anyway. Goodnight for nowâœŒđŸŸ
