I’ve asked my followers many times for RTs when I ask for abled allies. Folks rarely RT. They’d rather RT an abled person with a blue check. But RT this: Lots of construction & re-tooling going on right now. It is *crucial* that everyone insist this be done accessibly!
Even abled cycle advocates aren’t speaking up for accessibility in new cycling infrastructure and it’s because many of them are ignorant and/or actively ableist. Disabled ppl need to be involved in leadership & planning or the “new normal” will look a lot like the abled old norm
If you’re abled, here’s how to be an ally: RT disabled cyclists like me who are pointing out infrastructure & policy issues. RT disabled students like me who are pointing out campus infrastructure & housing issues. #MyCycleIsMyMobilityAid
Educate yourself on disabled issues from the many disabled folks here on Twitter. And if no disabled folks are active & speaking up already in the mtgs you’re attending, mention accessibility issues yourself (while seeking out disabled leaders in your community to ally with).
There is inaccessible housing, sidewalks, and cycle/walk paths being built in my community & on my campus RIGHT NOW. I’ve spoken up repeatedly but unless more of us do, we’re going to get the same exclusionary ADA-violating infrastructure that promotes climate change.
Same goes for other cities & towns. I’ve seen tons of abled New Urbanism/cycling advocates who ignore the constructive critique I’ve given them as a disabled cyclist. This needs to change or even “progressive” advocates will keep a regressive ableist world in place.
How do you educate yourself via Disability Twitter? Follow @SFdirewolf who is a leader & also RTs lots of disabled folks. For disabled cyclists, follow me @Wheels4Well @CrippledCyclist (there are more on Twitter, but start with those accounts). #MyCycleIsMyMobilityAid
