WHY YOU SHOULD STOP BEING TRIGGERED BY ACTORS OF COLOUR IN PERIOD DRAMAS: A THREAD
In recent years, there has been a positive trend towards the greater inclusion of actors of colour in period dramas. Sometimes this can come off as tokenisation, but on the whole it should be welcomed. However, as expected, this trend has generated considerable backlash
there is a tendency to treat period dramas as “social escapism” for middleclass white people. This simply panders to existing prejudices. So if you’re upset by a black actor in an Austen adaptation you need to have a long think about why you’re watching in the first place
