Rape prevention. Campaigns that focus on women as potential victims saying watch what you drink, what you wear or how you get home are victim blaming and simply play into a victim blaming narrative. This blaming narrative can create self blame in victims. 1/12
Campaigns that focus on perpetrators are important but there is also a need to recognise that many men tune out of these campaigns because they don’t identify themselves as rapists. 2/12
A campaign which brings men into the conversation as part of a solution would be valuable for prevention surely? Within this you can talk about actions of perps, consent, the negative power of men’s silence but also the strength of men coming together to prevent. 3/12
I often wonder why we don’t use the power of pro-social norms to influence behaviour. A majority of men are uncomfortable with the abusive behaviour of their friends but many won’t speak up. So, how do we get men to speak up? 4/12
Communicate the healthy norm. Build the team. There’s a small minority of men fucking it up for the majority. That will remain the case until we see more courage from men on these issues.Oh & this is also about Male victims of rape/sex assault who are victims at hands of men 5/12
I want to see campaigns focusing on the culture that gives the perp the permission to rape. I want to see campaigns that focus on men (and societies) silence around these issues. 6/12
It’s 2020 and we still see far too many girls and women being raped by men. And we see far too many boys and men being sexually abused by men. When we ignore culture we shouldn’t be surprised when it bites us. 7/12
Culture is more than fancy slogans or the signing of pledges or telling men they simply need to act. Whilst they do we need to invite men into this conversation in a way that helps them see these issues. Many men still can’t handle the truth and fight back or tune out. 8/12
It’s getting men past this discomfort that is often missing from many approaches. So why is prevention of these issues important? Because men’s violence against women, men’s violence against men and Male suicide are all connected. Power ( lack of power) and control. 9/12
In his now famous speech @DavidMorrisonAU articulated the approach needed. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. This focus on organisational culture is a blueprint for addressing culture in wider society 10/12
So a bit of a thread. A wider approach to prevention is much needed and would be of great benefit to us all 12/12
