The Kandyan home garden
In Sri Lanka, home gardens have been identified as an integral part of the landscape and culture for centuries. Kandyan home garden is defined, based on the historical Kandyan Kingdom.

Thus, Kandyan home gardens blend characteristics to suit the socioeconomic, cultural, and ecological needs of the area’s diverse communities and landscapes.
Climate zone
This area mostly falls in the wet zone of Sri Lanka and occasionally in the intermediate zone, where the climate and edaphic environment support luxurious growth of perennial trees, which consists of deep soil systems.
Management
Kandyan home gardens are managed through family labour as smallholdings with an average land area of 0.4 ha. Despite their small average size, they are characterized by dense, multistoried arrangements with a combination of mixed but compatible species.
The family who owns a Kandyan home garden has their all needs for survival and healthy life in their day to day life. It provides many valuables; food, medicine, construction materials, economically valuable products, and many other services.
Arrangement
These are tree-based systems where many of the trees (40%–50%) are tropical fruit trees. Different canopy and root configurations and different requirements for light, nutrients, water and space maximize the resource use in the system.
Plant biodiversity
Although its primary priority goes to the social needs, it’s capable to enhance the biodiversity unknowingly. Plenty of plant species are conserved, which are belonging to several plant families, 40-60% of them have been evaluated under IUCN Red List 2012.
Ecology
It's a life harbour for organisms, in order to achieve healthy environments. Every garden is interconnected, which creates crucial ecological corridors. Each layer in the corridors has dynamic ecosystems, which consist of pollinators and predators to stabilize the system.
Conclusion
Kandyan home gardens are one of the best traditional knowledge sources in Sri Lanka. Where the social intention is to full fill their needs from the environment, without harming the biodiversity through a successful ecological enhancement.
