What I learned from last week's drama is that despite the fact Finn is the character with the most possible romantic partners, regardless of any actual racism(intentional or not) by Reylos, if you didn't choose him as the partner for the white female lead, you were seen as racist
I mean, in a distant way, I get it, but it's kind of convoluted.
Rey is a good character, but not shipping her with Finn isn't a sign of white supremacy?
Rey is not a more valuable partner than Poe or later Rose or Jannah, so not shipping Finn with Rey isn't a political act
I've seen people smarter than me say that Hollywood is inherently the product of a system that lifts up white people/narratives, and that's true! but erasing other characters to lift Rey and Finn's relationship as the Only Pure Ship has its own levels of ickiness.
I like FinnPoe and FinnRose, but also I like GingerFlower art and I have even seen some cool DarkPilot stuff.
This is why holding up a ship as a political virtue signal makes no sense; this is a field in which I can hold multiple beliefs and not have them be damaging
I'm against fascism but I can like romantic webs between different characters in their own spaces. Shipping isn't activism, and I am sick of people holding it up as such.
And let me clarify: I'm not against FinnRey, but the behavior of people who need to defend it by saying you're XYZ for not shipping it.
I'm white. I have spent the past few years trying to be anti-racist and I know I will fail at times.
But shipping is not that battlefield.
