A secret most don’t know about me:

Michael Jordan FUNDED my childhood and early adulthood

I’ll explain later
In 1989, after several years as a corporate executive, my dad decided to walk away and pursue his dream of owning his own company......
When I was born up until I was 8; my dad worked in the corporate office for a large department store chain

He was always flying somewhere and was rarely home with his family

It wasn’t the life he had dreamed of; it was the life someone else had dreamed of for him
I remember many of nights crying on the phone wherever he was at the time just telling him I missed him and I loved him

My dad was filing those things away as motivation to make a move

The company he was with was under poor management and he could see the writing on the wall
When his company stock had reached its peak he cashed out and resigned

When his bosses came to see him to “talk some sense” into him; they told him “you are going to be living on the street begging us for your job one day” (they needed him because he was very good at his job)
Dad had a dream of never having another boss

He took his money, along with blood sweat and tears, and started his very own athletic shoe store in 1989. The store was called Sideline

Nike was starting to really break out at that time so they were blowing up
Nike sent a rep to come see my dad for consideration but they told him without a year of business under his belt they could not open an account with him

He busted his tail for a year selling everything he could to pay the bills and keep food on the table
Lo and behold after a year Nike approved our store for an account with them

Jordan was starting to come on strong in 1990 so dad fought hard to be approved to carry the top of the line product

My dad’s company flourished over the years.....
We were in a small town of about 25,000 but my dad took great pride in what he was able to offer his customers

It was said that we had the widest and greatest selection of shoes and sports apparel within 100 miles

Competing with nearly every major chain there was......
The company he left that told him he would be on the streets begging for his job—

They filed bankruptcy and went under

My dad was never rich but he was very successful because he achieved his goals

Don’t ever let someone rip a dream from your hands

It’s yours

Hold on to it
My dad was and is my hero

He ran his company successfully up until he passed away from cancer in 2012

Dad taught me how to fight for everything

He fought for his business

He fought for his customers

He fought for his friends

He fought for his family

He fought for his time
I owe who I am to my dad

My kids will never know what it’s like to miss me like that

I’ve fought hard to get where I am and I’m not going back

(I owe Michael Jordan too for different reasons. The success of his shoes and apparel effectively fed and clothed me growing up 😜)
One of the biggest regrets I have is my dad not getting to see me start my company

He was an honorable man who loved helping others. He would’ve loved what I do
