Starting a thread on common myths around Disability. Will post one everyday! Hope it makes people understand Disability better.
Myth: Only a small number of people live with a disability.

Truth: A total of 1 billion people or 15% of the world's population lives with disability.

Fact: The population of PwDs around the world is higher than that of Germany, United Kingdom, France etc.
Myth: Disability is a personal tragedy, a result of past deeds.

Truth: Disability has nothing to do with past deeds, whether good or bad. There is nothing evil about a disabled body.

Fact Check: PwDs would prefer if you stop patronizing them and let them have their rights!
Myth: Persons with Disabilities are asexual and cannot develop sexual relations with others.

Truth: Not all PwDs are asexual.

Fact Check: Most PwDs have sexual needs and desires just like anyone else.
Myth: All Persons with Disabilities are very brave and inspirational for the non-disabled community.

Truth: The idea that all PwDs are brave and inspirational is embedded in pity.

Fact Check: A disability does not necessarily make an individual inspirational.
Myth: The disabled community should be addressed using euphemisms like differently-abled, Divyang etc.

Truth: The international standard term for the disabled community is 'Persons with Disabilities'

Fact Check: It is better to call disabled individuals by their names.
Myth: PwDs are dependent on people around them and can only survive with help and charity.

Truth: Not all PwDs are dependent on caretakers. And more importantly, dependence on caregivers itself doesn’t mean one can’t live a complete, dignified life.
