Are you a frequent flyer?

Are you a lover of aviation movies?

Have you noticed the the swirl sign painted on the aircraft engine?

Why do Airplane Engines have this white spiral marks?

These marks aren’t necessarily there to beautify the engines.
They are on the engines

1/n
Serving as important safety measure for the ground crew and also for birds.

When an aircraft engine is running, it generate loud noise, thereby allowing men in apron often called ground crew to wear hearing protection.

Also, if many engines are running & generating noise

2/n
at the same time, it will be difficult to quickly identify the one running and the one not running.

That is where the invention of the spiral sign came to play.

When engine runs, the swirl began swirling along.

The spiral has a function, alerting the ground crew to notice

3/n
a running engine & ensuring that no one comes too close to it.

The second function: The gutter nature of the swirl sign scares away birds 🦅during flight to avoid bird strikes.

I hope next time you see this sign on aircraft engine, you would be happy knowing d meaning.
