Are you plus size? Do you think there's no ethical or sustainable brands that make your size? This used to be the case. But in the last few years I've made it my mission to talk to more and more brands about making more sizes. And more brands are.
I also want to say I'm not the only person having this conversation. There's a few of us out here pushing for ethical and sustainable brands to dress all of us. It's tiresome work and if you want more resources, I'm happy to help on Patreon ... but as a one off ... here goes ...
@LoraGene who I did a collaboration with (two knitwear pieces, one dress) is a master of making beautiful clothing for all bodies. The clothing is manufactured in Bulgaria in small workshops and many makers are still creating.
@birdsonglondon's workshop is on hiatus but they have a beautiful spring collection. I've ordered two dresses myself and cannot wait to receive them! Even if I get them at the end of the summer, I'll still be happy because I know they'll be great.
@shopfreelabel has some tanks that I'm definitely interested in. I think the silhouette is really clean and on point for summer dressing. I love an interesting shape. Their wrap trousers also look cool.
Everything from @bigbudpress goes before I can get my hands on it but I love the usage of color! For so long if people made plus size clothing you couldn't get bright cool colors. I'm glad that's changing.
@statethelabel is another brand where I've not managed to get my hands on the goods, but I know friends who swear by their pieces.
Can't find Alice Alexander on here (I just searched their website but couldn't find a Twitter handle). But here's a link to the website. Cool jackets going on there: https://alicealexander.co/
Esby is another brand that I can't find a Twitter handle for. They go up to a 4XL in some pieces: https://www.esbyapparel.com/collections/womens
Did you know Aidy Bryant has a brand called Pauline? I'm into it. Shirt dresses pretty much never go out of style: https://paulineny.com/
I am always forever in love with @marahoffman's designs. Each season is a surprise and delight and of course when she offered extended sizes I was delighted and hoped more brands would get on board.
Active wear? (Or laying around in your sports bra wear?) True story, when Girlfriend Collective launched, they gave their leggings away to the first however many people. I got a pair! Now they come in all the colors and all the sizes: https://www.girlfriend.com/
And that's 20 ethical and sustainable brands that make plus sizes. Phew! I have to stop because it's getting late here and this took an hour. If you like this list and find it valuable, consider signing up for my Patreon cuz there's more where that came from!
Here's the thing ... when standard size people ask me where to shop, I refuse to do that free. But once a year I do a thread like this because plus size folks aren't treated fairly in this space. So think of it as a public service. But this is what I get paid to do.
I can't give it all away for free because that's not fair to my Patrons. But if you'd like to become a Patron, it certainly helps support the unpaid labor I do when I'm explaining to brands for hours WHY they should include everyone in their sizing: https://www.patreon.com/AjaBarber
(Lastly I said 20 but I clearly can’t count ... it’s 18 😂)
