BAKING CHRONICLES: I’ve made many cakes and cookies in my life, but never attempted bread. Then my cousin sent me a book of my great grandmother’s recipes, and I decided to attempt her #challah. Here goes nothing.

In the tradition of grandmas, Great Grandma Edith baked from memory and didn’t measure, adjusting as she went. So the recipe has generalities like “2-4 eggs”, which seems like quite a difference. (I used 3.)

*quickly Googles “How to braid four strands”*
This is commensurate with my braiding skills. (Also, I think I want the strands thinner and longer next time, despite having gotten them to the 12” length recommended in the recipe.)
Poppy seed has always been my challah topper of choice.
Ok, it proved for another hour, and ... it looks pretty much the same. It was supposed to double in size! Nothing for it now, I guess. *closes eyes, crosses fingers, and shoves that sucker in the oven*
It looks ... okay. Not perfect - the split shouldn’t be there, I know, and the crust is a bit dry - but it looks edible. The real test is inside, though ...
It’s bread! Look at that, it’s bread! It’s well-cooked on the inside, and it tastes good! I MADE BREAD, EVERYBODY! https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😃" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit geöffnetem Mund">
