Tips for increasing your follower count on Twitter

🧵
First, if you’re looking to go from 500 to 5,000 followers in one day, this isn’t the thread for you.

I’m going to share strategies that aim to improve the quality of your engagements. Sometimes this leads to an uptick in followers.

It has to be authentic.
You have to know why you want to gain followers.

What purpose does it serve?

Are you doing it for clout or other reasons?

You have to attract the right type of followers. For example, aiming engage people with diverse perspectives within your field is a fantastic goal.
If your goal is clout, trust me on this one. No number will ever satisfy your desire to become an influencer.

All of your activity will be driven by metrics and tactics to increase followers.

It gets ugly real quick and you lose your authentic voice.
Ok, here we go.

1. Add value.

How? A few of examples ⤵️
Instead of just retweeting, try retweeting with a comment.

If it’s an article, I add quotes and tag people who are mentioned in the piece.

You can tag people who aren’t in the article; however, don’t overdo it.

@jgitchell does high value tagging that I appreciate. I’m frequently tagged in articles on scicomm and misinfo. Those are topics I care about and want to see.

Tag people with intention. Make sure it’s relevant to their field or interest.

If you don’t do this, you’ll come across as a pest and might get put on mute.

Why? Any time someone responds, retweets, or likes the tagged tweet, the person will get a notification.
2. Engage others.
If you’re a new user, you’ll find limited success with simply retweeting others and sharing articles. You have to engage people to increase followers.

If people don’t know you’re there, they won’t know to follow you.
You might be really excited about the work and updates that one person shares. Great!

Don’t respond to every single one of their tweets. It can come across as exhausting.

Comment on other people’s posts, but don’t act like a troll.

You can share alternative perspectives w/o attacking.

If someone is putting out an original idea, or conversation starter, it can be exhausting to fight over minor details. Be careful. You could come across as petty.
Pro tip: If you’re in a spirited debate with someone, remove the other folks tagged in the reply.
3. Amplify others.
This thread is a good example of how I do this strategically.

I’ll do a welcome tweet if someone reaches out and says they are new to Twitter. It’s a tough space to navigate initially, so an intro tweet can help build community for the newbie.

Intro tweets have evolved into intro threads where I include suggested follows and helpful resources.

This amplifies others in an authentic way. ⤵️

Amplify the success of others.

If you see someone posting about a great new life or career update, say congratulations.

I like to retweet with a comment these types of posts because we all need a little positivity in our Twitter feed these days.

Amplify accounts that consistently share high quality content.

Here’s an example ⤵️

Don’t just say “follow this person!”

Explain why people should follow the account.

4. Share opinions.
Caveat: Strong opinions could earn you a reputation for being controversial.

Trust me, I know 😂

In all seriousness, have a goal in mind and think about how your audience can benefit from the additional perspective you share.
One thing people with high follower accounts have in common is that they share opinions that add value. That’s why an audience follows.

It seems so obvious, but this is often overlooked.

Tap into your unique perspective and share it.
You have to keep yourself in check though. As follower counts rise, it can be tempting to share opinions about everything.

Don’t fall into the Dunning-Krueger trap.

Stick to what you know.
Sticking to what you know will increase your audience’s trust. For ex., I discuss subjects that involve STEM&med, but I’ll never try to interpret scientific concepts.

I now describe my limitations because people frequently address me as doctor. ⤵️

To sum it up, here are a few tips to improve your strategy and increase followers on Twitter.

1. Add value
2. Engage others
3. Amplify others
4. Share opinions
If you were hoping for some secret formula for creating viral posts, sorry. I can’t help you.

To be honest, you don’t want a post to go viral.

When it happens, you’re forever known for whatever it is you shared.

It’s like a permanent tattoo you can’t remove.
Building a following takes time. Get comfortable w/ the platform and aim for authentic interactions w/ others.

If you follow the advice in this thread, you’ll forget about chasing numbers & status.

No one really cares about follower count anyways.

Followers come and go.
