Here are some things members of Congress can do instead of tweeting concern about Trump's purge of Inspectors General. This tweet is directed at Republicans AND Democrats in congress who are dropping the ball here:
- media blitz: melt the airwaves
- hold a hearing and call the IG

- also find him in contempt, using your inherent contempt power, to at least have that on his political record (I recommend against sending the Sergeant at arms to be gunned down by diplomatic security)

- call every other witness you can, not only witnesses to the firing but also witnesses to the investigation that led Trump to retaliate against Linick (don't let the cover up succeed)
- ask EVERY administration witness at ANY other hearing about IGs
- hold a Senate hearing too

- announce that you will cut the White House budget to 1/3 its current level for the first quarter of FY 2021 (Oct - Dec 2020)
- to have a powerful effect, only 4 Republican Senators would need to threaten to block all of Trump's nominees until he reinstates Atkinson and Linick

- announce now that, even if Trump reinstates them, you will not confirm a White House lawyer to be coronavirus bailout IG
- same goes for any Trump nominees for Inspector General positions who have previously been Trump admin officials or are unqualified (like the HHS nominee)

- demand all IG nominees obtain the blessing of a majority of members of CIGIE, using a secret ballot to prevent retaliation
- get 100 from each party to sign a letter demanding Trump stop his purge of IGs and threatening specific action
- ask Johnson why HSGAC is doing NOTHING!

- if the Republicans won't cooperate Schumer and Pelosi and others need to make the same level of noise Grassley would be making if he actually cared about inspectors general or if a Democrat were president
- melt the airwaves again, rinse, repeat

- educate the public on why Trump's war against the government's anticorruption mechanisms is dangerous
- educate the public on the conscious failure of Trump's congressional allies to uphold their constitutional duty of oversight and their complicity in tearing down the republic

Will these things work? Who knows. But what won't work is lowering the American flag and raising the white flag of surrender. We didn't send you to Washington to surrender to a wannabe authoritarian.
