[DEHING PATKAI, a thread]

Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the "Amazon of the East" is about to lose it's existence after National Board For Wildlife (NBFW) approval to begin coal mining activities in Saleki region of the sanctuary.
Serving as the only Tropical Rainforest chain for the state of Assam, it is rich in biodiversity and flora and fauna. It is the home of 4 of total 5 species of Globally threatened Hornbill. It is often claimed as a paradise of Birdwatchers for bearing over 400 species of birds.
A distinct feature of the Northeastern India is the Monsoon season which brings heavy downpour during the months of May-July. The arrival and duration of this Tropical Monsoon Climate in Assam is mainly affected by the climate of Dehing Patkai.
A luxurious ecosystem, Dehing Patkai is the home to countless species of medicinal plants and herbs. In terms of orchid diversity, it is one of the most important places in Northeast. About 108 species of orchids have been found in the region, some of which are very rare.
The Dehing Patkai Forest is home to over a dozen of different ethnic tribal communities which also includes some of the indigenous Assamese communities particularly, Ahom, Singpho, Tai Phake, Moran, Burmese, Nepali etc. It always has been a place of rich cultural heritage.
Dehing Patkai Forest chain has always been under constant threat due to illegal mining activities, poaching, exploitation of animal skins, medicinal plants and timber for last 16 years. Even being under the India Wildlife Protection Act 1972, these activities are still going on.
Now, with the approval of legal mining activities in the region by National Board For Wildlife (NBFW) under Indian Govt the very existence of Dehing Patkai is under threat.
