Being an optimistic kind of dude, I initially thought MI gov whitmore was just an imbecile for her lockdown extensions, but now it's plain obvious it's more nefarious. Based on actual chinavirus death numbers there is no f'n reason the lockup should go on another day. /1
I'm a FF/paramedic for a city in Wayne county, MI which is a "hotspot". Not going to lie, it was bad mid march through mid/late april. Our call volume went up 50%. We were transporting 15-20 patients out of the city's nursing homes in a 24 hr shift. /2
The local hospitals were close, but they never were totally overrun. Hell, one hospital was an exclusive covid unit and now w no covid pt's they want to reopen for buisness as usual, but they signed a contract w the state which said they can't reopen until the pandemic is over. 3
Rarely did we take a person w covid out of a private residence that we knew was going to die within the hour.

However the vast majority of the nursing home patients being transported were too far gone and we knew it was their last ride.

It was wearing us down emotionally. /4
Our runs have plummeted to pre covid levels, but our assaults, OD's, domestics, suicides, etc has jumped.

What really stands out are the rising number of (covid symptom free) sudden heart attacks and strokes because people were not receiving regular medical care/filling Rx. /5
Here's where I'm going with this. As of 3pm today, in MI there has been 4,825 deaths from covid.

Ages 60+ account for 87% of the deaths.

If you include ages 50-59 that # goes to 95%.

Ages 0-49 account for less than 5%.

All #'s obtained from:
https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98163_98173---,00.html /6
I'll just stick with the 60+ age group. I hate and suck at math but here we go:

87% (# of deaths of 60+ year olds) of 4,825 (total deaths) is 4,197.

4,825 - 4,197 = 628

628 Michiganders have died that were younger than 60 from covid. /7
If anybody is saying damn, 60 isn't that old, I agree. In MI 60-69 yrs/old accounts for 18% or 868 deaths. Obviously these patients had a comorbidity. Diabetics get their ass kicked by covid. My Dr. buddy said he'd rather be a healthy 75 yo than a 55 yo obese diabetic v. covid /8
Depending where you look, the percentages vary state to state. They are obviously higher in states where their governors like ours (all blue states, weird) ordered that nursing homes take covid pts in.

Seems like the national average is 40%.

So anyway of Michigan's 4,197 60+ (rare for 50 y/o and younger to be in a n. home) fatalities from covid, using the national average 40%, 1,679 Pts could have had a better chance in a nursing home and thus significantly lowering the overall death #'s. /11
If we button up the nursing homes, 70 + y/olds continue to be cautious and 50 to 60 y/olds with medical issues do the same, there is no reason not to end the lockup.

All the healthy people that are still afraid can still stay home with netflix and bitch away on social media. 12
Whether whitmore is playing politics and holding out for a fed bail out, or to make trump look bad, or to squash the middleclass, or try to be the VP pick, or is just plain inept doesn't matter at this point.

Time to open it up.

Oh, and if I get the "economy vs 1 precious life" thing, you probably never had to tell a wife that her husband and father of her children hung himself in the garage with a note apologizing that he couldn't provide anymore since his business went bankrupt.

/15
Or tell the parents of a 25 y/o that their son is dead in the basement from an overdose after having to move back home since he was laid off.

I can tell too many similar stories.
