Any specialists in Egyptian art out there who could help me or anyone who could point me to a answer? Is this a single amulet (obverse/reverse) or two heart amulets around Sennefer's neck? (photo by Gerhard Huber)
Thanks all who’ve replied so far. I’m aware of Sousa’s work and the statue from Karnak + the tomb of Khaemhat (together with TT96, the only representations of “double” heart amulets acc to Baines). I’m interested here in more specific representational rules in Egyptian art
I'm accepting that there is a single heart pendant in the scene at Sennefer's tomb. When the ancient Egyptians wanted to depict all sides of a 3D object in a 2D surface like a tomb wall, they would duplicate the visible side of the objects, as in the drawing below (Schäfer 1986)+
In this case, they wanted to depict the side of the bag behind the donkey, so the duplicated the bags visible side to indicate that the bag was placed on top of the animal with parts hanging on both sides. What do you think, @egyptolokid?
