why acab includes all cops: an informative thread intended to spread nothing but education and solidarity.
i would like to start by pointing out that i am white. i will never experience firsthand the effects of systemic racial oppression. but i can use this privilege to spread as much information and action as i can. if any poc want to add something or correct me, please do so.
let's look at the history of police. the american police force was established as a slave patrol, with the sole purpose of targeting racial minorities. they existed to hunt escaped slaves, and publicly beat them.
as patrols shifted to prohibiting actions and enforcing national law, the institution of police proceeded to exist to create racial inequality - but now, wealth inequality, gender inequality, and lgbt+ inequality.
as a private institution, owned and operated by the interest of rich, caucasian men, the police force disproportionately targeted not just poc, but poor people, women, and lgbt+ people. while the rich, white, and male tended to receive little to no law enforcement,
poor people, lgbt+ people, women and still poc continued to face violent brutality from police. today, the police force is under the same influence. historically the police force was never federalized.
while the statement "not all cops are racist" might have some integrity to it, the incarceration system is still privatized, and used to enforce racial, gendered, wealth and identity inequality.
regardless of if individual police officers mean to be racist, homophobic, sexist, or classist, they willingly 'protect and serve' a racist, homophobic, sexist and classist institution - which, again, was never officially federalized.
let's jump into that. even if the police force was federalized, is it not evident that the same people who historically held power in america (wealthy caucasian men) still hold power? the police force, if federal, would still be operated by the interests of wealthy white men.
let's get back up to date. the police force (as a whole) has proven to be tied to and influenced by neo-nazi fringe groups, and are publicly known to exercise authority and brutality over the blm movement.
allow me to set something up. since 2018, police brutality has been the leading cause of death in young black men. thousands of black lives are lost at the hands of police officers. but what if they were criminals? black crime is disproportionately reported, and falsified.
more often than not, black individuals are killed as bystanders of a crime, or even the victim calling for help. there are far too many police brutality and death incidents for me to discuss, but i encourage you to look into how frequently innocent black people die from cops.
now, that's thousands of black lives that would be saved as a result of abolishing the police. those individual cops that are not racist might not necessarily deserve to lose their career, but careers and real lives are not a comparable loss.
a handful of police getting to keep their career because "not all cops are bad", versus the thousands of lives lost. what is more important to you? even if these facts mean nothing to you, i ask that you consider what saying "not all cops" weighs. careers, versus lives.
now, i've seen a lot of "blame the institution, not the cop". but that is exactly what the notion of acab is for. it says all cops are inherently bad, not all people who are cops. the slot to be filled is bad, not directly the person who fills it. (every slot.)
this thread was targeted mostly at the racial inequality enforced by police, but please note that these ideas ring true for sexism, classism, lgbt+ oppression, and wealth disparity.
who would we call instead of police? while individual police can have a morally good response to petty crime and help someone, the purpose of the police force is to incarcerate, not rehabilitate. having a strong community would abolish the need for a police force.
crime rates are disproportionately higher in poor communities, broken communities. (which are disproportionately black, due to this exact issue - systemic racism in america.) if an anti crime task force put as much effort into transforming neighborhoods into strong
communities rather than target and incarcerate individuals, crime rates altogether would lower. if the need to separate someone from society to protect others, it is more cost efficient and morally better to provide rehabilitation rather than pay for them to sit in jail.
there is always a reason someone commits a crime. poverty, mental instability, justifiable anger. it is important to find and fix the root of crime, not continue to exploit the source for racially and classist charged profit.
as of right now, there are already leftist organizers providing community crime task forces, that can legally respond to crime or emergencies as a moral civilian.
it's important to remember that saying "not all cops" does nothing to help. it does nothing but exercise the privilege of ignorance. i appreciate anyone who took the time to educate themselves today. please continue to listen to minorities, and do your part to end this.
with that being said, police violence is not an accident. police should be held accountable. police are not moral. police are fascists. abolish the police. transform your community. join organizations. continue to research ways to help. LISTEN. TO. MINORITIES.
this website has a lot of helpful information on how to help spread this movement. if anyone wants to know more, i talk about this often- friend me, dm me, quote me, i don't mind. i would love to see the acab community grow. https://aworldwithoutpolice.org/tag/acab/
