Thread: The Senate Intel Committee just completed its report detailing the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign, and Trump has been escalating his attacks on *everyone* involved in it.

Looks like this is big, and Trump wants to control the redactions. https://twitter.com/jeremyherb/status/1261360950789181441
Remember, there were two Russia investigations into the Trump campaign: Mueller’s criminal investigation and the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation, which was opened by Acting FBI Director Andy McCabe and approved by the Gang of 8 in May 2017 in the wake of the Comey firing.
We also know Mueller did not investigate Trump’s finances. Mueller believed the question of whether Trump was compromised was a counterintelligence issue rather than a criminal one, and was across the “red line” Rosenstein drew on his investigation, so he didn’t go there.
As I understand it, an FBI counterintelligence investigation ordinarily would be run by a team reporting to the FBI Director, with an informal reporting line to the DNI and a direct reporting line to the POTUS (unless he is the *subject* of the investigation, as he was here).
Now we finally know that the Senate Intelligence Committee did a report on the counterintelligence investigation, which they completed today. Before Senate Intel can publicly release the report, it needs to be declassified (with the classified parts redacted) by the DNI.
So our main players are: FBI agents, FBI Director, DNI, and Chairman of Senate Intelligence, with FBI and DNI subject to review by the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community.

And what does that group have in common? 🤔

Trump has been attacking ALL of them lately!
1. FBI Agents: Trump has been vilifying FBI agents on Twitter ever since he took office, calling them scum. He’s fired guys like Ohr and Strzok *because* they were detailed to the counterintelligence investigation. And Trump’s attacks on FBI agents have increased lately.
3. DNI: Coats was fired on August 15, 2019. Trump tried to install loyalist John Ratcliffe, and settled on Joseph Maguire, then fired him on February 20, 2020 and brought in wingnut Grenell. But *now* when it count the most, Trump is turning again to hardcore loyalist Ratliffe.
4. Chairman of Senate Intel: Burr was just forced out as Chairman due to an investigation for insider trading. But why bother forcing him out now that the Committee has finished its report?

Well, because the Chairman will work with Ratliffe on the *redactions* to the report!
The Senate Intel Committee’s report has Trump in a tizzy. You know he’s heard from allies on the committee what’s in the report. And it *must* be explosive!

Just like the Mueller Report, controlling the redactions is the key, and Trump is moving for control of the black marker.
Note: The statement released by Burr and Warner when they released the report (linked in the first tweet of this thread), says Senate Intelligence prepared its own redacted version of the report, setting up a showdown between what the Committee and ODNI deem as proper redactions.
