What if we renamed "best practices" to "boring practices"?
They make a fair default for what's not our focus.

Each "boring practice" is fungible, eligible for thoughtful replacement.
But not all of them, not all at once.

I don't want to ask "Is the team using best practices?"

I want to ask, "Which boring practices are they using?"
and for each difference: "What's the story behind that?"
