Violence is violence. There is never any justification for it. Ever. Every human being has rights. Nothing justifies violation of those fundamental human rights. It’s the duty of all Governments to uphold, & protect every person’s human rights. Simple. No ‘cleverness’, required.
One thing I have learnt over decades of fighting for women’s human rights: the minute you start justifying, explaining away rights violation, it’s a slippery slope. Today it’s women. Tomorrow queer people. Next week ethnic minorities. Next year, those with albinism, HIV, Covid..
I have also learnt that power, & the exercise/experience of how power operates isn’t a constant. Today, you may be in a position of power, tomorrow, you’re completely powerless in another context. What doesn’t change is you’re still human, & are entitled to enjoy your rights.
Each & every one of us must always be careful how we relate to & talk about others, whose rights may be violated today. Solidarity is key. There are many ways of expressing solidarity. Do what chimes with your values.
I shall let the music say the rest.
