I've seen quite a number of people here confused about taking an online course, others are stuck with one they can't finish and some are just wondering; ARE ONLINE COURSES REALLY THAT IMPORTANT???

Well, before you pay/register for that online course, you should read this;
The best way to approach everything in this life is with a clear head with purpose.
With that you know;
What you want and why you want it.
When you know those two things, it may not be difficult to find out;
How you want it and where you want it.
You should approach taking an online course with a clear head with purpose.
What online course do you want ?
Why do you want it ?

In fact, I think that the "why" should come before the "what".

Why do people take online courses ?
It's simple, to learn a new skill, to get knowledge or to get a certificate.
So, why do you want to take an online course ?
Do you need skills ?
Do you need relevant knowledge ?
Do you really need a certificate ?

Before you answer, you should know this about online courses;
Online courses are just physical class sessions, but online 😁
Just like a physical class comes in levels, online courses do too and the one(s) you'll take depends solely on what you want.
To understand whether you should take an online course or not (and the type of online course to take) you should evaluate the current state in your career, then think about your career goals.
To do this, you simple need to ask yourself these questions;
Where am I in my career ?
Where do I want to be in the next five years ? What do I want for my career ?
What do I need to get to where I want to be ?

Wrote those things down. I'll give you a minute to get a pen and paper.

Done ?
Good.
Now look at what you've written.
The answer to whether you should take an online course or not lies in what you've written as "what do I need to get to where I want to be ?"

Now let me guess, you've probably written a few skills and knowledge you need to gain to get to where you want to be.
Are you looking to take up career in a sector ?
Seeking promotion at work ?

What you've written may show you that you need to learn skills and gain knowledge in certain areas. These skills and knowledge will put you on the right path to achieving your career goals.
The skills you now realize that you need will be divided into two parts soft skills and hard skills.
BTW Soft skills are not soft skills because they are not too important, they are super important! And hard skills are not called hard skills because they are difficult!
Hard skills are teachable/practical abilities, how well you know them can be easily measured. Hard skills like; Web development, data analysis, research etc.
Soft skills on the other hand are traits, important traits that determine whether you'll handle your hard skills well.
I like to put it that way. Example ? Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, decision making, critical Thinking etc.
Like @NaijaFlyingDr likes to put it, hard skills will get you the job, soft skills will help you keep it!

Now back to our note;
Let's say you realize that leadership is part of the skills you need to learn to achieve your goals, will you need to go pay for an online class in leadership ?
That depends. Here's what I think you can do;
This applies to all forms of soft skills you may think you need
Evaluate yourself to understand how you fair in those skills. Think about your relationship with people and how you've used those skills, ask people questions whether they think you have those skills and how they think you've used them.
