Virginia is not ready to reopen - a thread on how black and brown bodies are being sacrificed, and what you can do today.

We came into the COVID-19 health crisis with historically-racist and oppressive structures that impact the health, public safety, economic opportunity and dignity of communities of color.

Black and Latinx communities are testing positive and dying at disproportionately high rates.
Every government and medical system is under enormous stress.
Philanthropic efforts are falling short of solving this gov't-sized problem. https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-richmond-virginia-majority-of-victims-black-americans-2020-4

Repeatedly, @GovernorVA and public health officials have emphasized that we must solve the health crisis if we ever want to handle the economic crisis. We were continually warned that data and science must guide every decision about VA's response.
Thanks to @MelLeonor_ & @TheAtlantic, the public is becoming aware that data was manipulated to make it seem that VA's plan to reopen is safe. This is particularly harmful to black & brown folks who are rightfully distrustful of gov't & health systems. https://www.richmond.com/special-report/coronavirus/virginia-misses-key-marks-on-virus-testing-as-leaders-eye-reopening/article_021e12c6-6d20-5030-9068-4caaeda495f7.html
OVERSTAND THIS: any decision to "reopen" without protections including hazard pay, child care, free & accessible testing, contact tracing and a commitment not to cooperate with ICE - is a death notice to black and brown workers. Masks and sanitizer alone are not health equity.
. @CareInActionUSA, @NewVAMajority, @CASAinAction, @RichmondForAll, @FairfaxNAACP and other coalition partners spoke out today to oppose any plan to reopen that does not protect our communities.
