I am increasingly concerned about relaxation of lockdown without having Test, Trace & Isolate in place. This brings a significant risk of an early second wave. I am sure TT&I is on hold waiting for the magic bullet of Matt's App & because Test is known not to be robust. 1
A 30% false-negative test rate risks letting a significant number of infected people back into the population to spread infection. It is however too highly politically to admit that the Test component is this weak when Matt has staked his reputation on 100k tests per day. 2
Symptoms are better than testing at not missing Covid-19 infection. Identify, Trace & Isolate is a more effective intervention for controlling Covid-19. This would also be quicker to implement at scale. Add 'Test' as accurate serological testing augments PCR swab testing. 3
Near universal registration of the population with a GP, the electronic GP clinical record system, coding of suspected Covid-19 & integrated texting platforms provide a unique infrastructure & opportunity for Identify, Test, Trace & Isolation monitoring, to 'Control the virus'4
There are thousands of NHS COVID clinical returners who have the necessary clinical, confidentiality & governance training who could be swiftly brought up to speed as contact tracers if supported by LA Public Health expertise. 5
Working together, General Practice and (LA) Public Health, in just a few days could start to Identify, Trace and Isolate and with that start to control the epidemic of Covid-19 in the UK. 6/End
