i owe so much to @BrennanCarley. im not sure he realises just how important and instrumental he has been in my career as a writer. in 2017 i was floundering and lost. he reached out to me and asked me whether i would be interested in writing for gq.
i was in new york at the time for my brother’s wedding and so i went to one world trade center to meet him. he was kind and generous and we brainstormed some ideas. he told me that he had secured some budget for queer stories on http://gq.com .
honestly, at the time i felt like i was punching *way* above my abilities to be writing for a publication like that. but he believed that i could do it. within a month or so, i had my first piece published. i was in heaven.
that moment was, in my mind, the catalyst for where my career has gone. that piece opened the doors for me in ways that i could only have dreamed.
since then, over nearly three years, i have had the immense privelege of working with @BrennanCarley on a whole bunch of pieces that im more proud of than nearly anything ive ever done. not only has he nurtured ideas, but he has been a considerate but brutal editor.
through working with him i have learned how to be an editor myself. he is my favourite editor that i have had the pleasure of working with.
it’s absolutely gutting to hear that because of cut backs due to covid-19, gq have let him go. i want to say thank him so much. there are so many writers and editors and stretched so thin, but @BrennanCarley always made space and time. he changed my life.
pls send any work his way. hire him! he’s truly one of the good ones.
thought i would manage that thread without typos, but not possible. love u @BrennanCarley
