When people get all riled up about Fox News’ decision to hype Obamagate (whatever that is), they forget one thing. Local news is covering COVID-19 like I’ve never seen a story covered before.
I’d love to see someone take a deep dive on local TV newscasts and the air time they are giving to the pandemic. The coverage I’ve seen is by and large amazing. There will be bushel baskets of Peabodys and Emmys and DuPont-Columbia awards for it.
COVID has touched every market in America, and every legit news director is experiencing what may be the story of their lifetime. Sure, Fox might bleat away trying to make up a scandal, but you just have to look out the door across the country to find the real story.
Right now, every parent I know is concerned about the rare COVID syndrome affecting kids, and as someone who had meningitis as a child, I’m concerned about it, too. That’s the story front of mind for many people, not unmasking.
People don’t know whether there will be camp, whether they can take a summer trip, whether it will be safe for kids to go back to school. This wasn’t supposed to be a problem. Now, it’s a huge one.
So, don’t wander off covering a new pebble skittering down the hill when the massive boulder is still right in the middle of the road.
