Let’s open a can of worms: If a woman comes forth as an abuse survivor with a male assailant, the narrative is always ‘I guess he hid it well.’
If a man comes forward with a female assailant, the narrative victim blames: ’They brought out the worst in eachother.’ He caused it.
Social denial of male victims isn’t only about how we view men. It’s how we view women. Women are bombarded with social roles: helpless, underprivileged, socially suppressed- on the flip: strong, capable. But so long as our basis is of oppression; everything is reactive.
Men can not be seen as victims -the fundamental social narrative is they are oppressors of women. They can not be raped by women, the stereotype of sex- hungry men prevails. Women can not be aggressors- to be labeled a strong woman requires fighting oppression (men)
I’m paraphrasing here for Twitter’s sake, but gender stereotypes- and their application in social treatment of those genders from birth- go beyond pink and blue. In order to achieve true equality stereotypes from both genders should be resolved. So long as actions are framed
In the basis of reactive to oppression, real or imagined, even the most aggressive response is softened with justification. A tame example: school dress codes, protests of which are lauded as young girls bravely fighting sexually opportunistic male gazes for the right to learn.
No one asks the obvious question: Why are we assuming the young men present in schools aren’t also there only to learn, or worse- are such predatory, sex-focused beasts the view of a girl’s body would limit their ability to function? Less tame: women who abuse men.
A woman who physically assaults a man need only to say she was afraid he may become aggressive as justification. He’s not required to be aggressive-just the fear.
A fear that’s been drilled into her head from infancy, irrespective of the man. It’s worse for LGBT communities.
