A NEED TO KNOW WHO A PHARMACIST IS

Recent turn of events here calls for a continuous need to educate the public (even the educated ones) who a PHARMACIST is.

A Pharmacist's view to your well being is a lot different from your Physician's view - that's why it's called a TEAM...
Your Physician is concerned with diagnosis down to when he draws out a treatment plan and a lot more (I leave them to explain the rest😉) but a Pharmacist is concerned with
• What's appropriate for your condition?
• In what form, dose, duration, route of administration etc?...
• Hope it won't have any devastating effect on you in itself, with another drug, food, herbal remedy or supplement?
• Is the treatment plan the best approach for you considering your age, genetics etc?
• Will you be able to afford the treatment and would it be cost effective?
• Based on drug's SAR, release profile which will be best for you?
• Will you be comfortable when on this therapy?
• What other non pharmacological approach can you take to aid your recovery or manage your condition?
• How best to create a reminder to take your medications?
• What misconceptions or myths needs to be debunked?

And a lot more. I have read in better climes, Pharmacist working in collaboration with Dieticians in how to incorporate medications into patient's meal.
Medical Review and Reconciliation, adverse drug reaction reporting etc
There are reports of people who have been brought out of ICU fast because of a Pharmacist's intervention (a combination of drugs was keeping the patient there). I for one witnessed one in UCH.
So, the next time you see people deriding a Pharmacist here, you better speak up...
because he might be the only thing standing between you and 6 feet below either financially, emotionally or even physically.
Check the perception of Pharmacists in Canada, US, UK, Australia etc, this will tell you how important they are to the health care sector.
And to those who have an issue with a Pharmacist around, I hope you've stocked a lot of paracetamol oh, 'cause you'll be needing a lot!

PHARMACISTS have come to stay and are way different from your PHYSICIAN in what they bring to the table.
And every time you put a pill in your mouth or apply a cream or administer an injection, remember a lot of sacrifice, hours, research and wit has been applied by a PHARMACIST.
Graçias!
