Here’s a thread of tips I’ve picked up from learning another language, and I’ll add more if i forget something!
Number 1. Do not ease up on your lessons. I know this is easier said than done, but keep a constant schedule. Designate a time each night to do some of your lessons.
Number 2. Set reminders! Maybe have alarms that go off certain times in a day, leave sticky notes around that help remind you to do your lessons. And if you feel like you can do more? Great! Pursue that! Just don’t burn yourself out. Which leads me to number 3..
Number 3. Burnout is dangerous. This is why I would not recommend doing DAILY lessons because as AWESOME as that is for retention, it’s not for everyone. If you feel like you can spend weeks/months at a time every day doing lessons for your language, awesome! Just pace yourself.
Number 4. Find others to chat with! As much as learning alone is, language is an inherently social concept. I promise you that if you find other people who are learning, or even native speakers to chat with, your fluency will SHOOT THROUGH THE ROOF.
Number 5: this is kind of a weird one, but make sure you’re using an app that also teaches you how to WRITE the language. I’ve been learning Japanese for a while and am very lucky to have found an app that teaches me the strokes for the kana, and is an important part of —
—languages. If this isn’t important for you, or your language doesn’t require anything aside from alphanumeric characters, or close enough that it doesn’t matter, then don’t worry about this. But if the script is foreign, try it! It can be fun and rewarding to learn.
Finally number 6: whatever you do, don’t give up!! Learning a new language is daunting with the amount of work involved but it can be such a gratifying and rewarding experience. I promise it will all be worth it in the end. Have patience with yourself and faith in your ability!
If you have any tips you’d like to share to others, please feel free to share them below!! I believe in you guys, you can do this! 🌸
