Took 24-48hrs for US-Euro media to largely forget that terrorists attacked maternity ward in #Afghanistan, with newborn children among the over 50 dead. The same media that told us for 20yrs how terrorism was such an important story. Not when dead are poor Muslims, it seems.
With the horrific attack on the maternity ward in #Afghanistan getting very little coverage: I wrote this a while back about why certain parts of the world get attention, while others don't...and the problem(s) with the "proximity" explanation. https://medium.com/thoughts-on-media/clicks-for-paris-but-not-beirut-it-s-more-than-geography-and-apathy-f329095554ef?source=friends_link&sk=96586d204aa3ed5fa33324f2cb4d68d8
Also relevant to Afghanistan is this thread about how the "what is closer to us gets coverage" argument is also full of some pretty big holes. https://twitter.com/ChrChristensen/status/1110196114651795457
